Book Reading with Author Michael Orange
Embracing the Ghosts: PTSD and the Vietnam Quagmire

Book Reading with Author Michael Orange Embracing the Ghosts: PTSD and the Vietnam Quagmire
Wednesday, April 26 • 7:10 p.m.
Parish Hall and online via Zoom
Join congregant Michael Orange as he reads from his book Embracing the Ghosts: PTSD and the Vietnam Quagmire. Participants will hear the lessons he gleaned from the PTSD therapy he completed three decades after coming home from combat duty in Vietnam, and have an opportunity to engage in a discussion after the 30 minute presentation. Books will be available to purchase.

Psychotherapist and grief counselor Dianna Diers, a longtime friend of Unity Church, had this to say about his memoir, “Michael Orange presents a deeply-toned mosaic, a ‘re-membering,’ of exiled parts of the life and memory that brought him to psychotherapy, meditation, political activism, and elderhood. Met with much honesty, humility, courage, and compassion, the ghosts reveal their lessons to Michael and to us. It is not what or even who we are, but how we are with all of ourselves and one another that heals.”

National Poetry Month in the Bookstall and Library

Joy Harjo
Living Nations, Living Words: An Anthology of First Peoples Poetry
This is perhaps the most significant poetry anthology of the last fifty years and is the corresponding anthology from Joy Harjo’s signature project as Poet Laureate of the United States, 2019-2022. Published by the Library of Congress. In the Anderson Library (811 L) and the Bookstall.
Unity's libraries and bookstall are run by a shared ministry team with the help of their staff liaison, Barbara Hubbard. In addition to the Anderson Library and the Whitman Children’s Library, the team is responsible for The Bookstall, Cairns literary journal, the Parlor Talks literary series, and Café Unity Poetry and Arts Salon. Anderson Library and Whitman Children's Library
  • The Anderson Library is on the second floor of the Eliot Wing. The Whitman Children's Library is located on the lower level where religious education classes for children and youth are held.
  • The Unity Library catalog is online at Library Thing. Search the catalog from any computer or find the online catalog in the Anderson Library.
  • Unity libraries are open Sundays after each service, and other times by arrangement.
  • The loan period for most items is three weeks. Ask a Library-Bookstall Team volunteer for help using materials from the Unity Historical Book Collection.
  • To request a book for the libraries, fill out the book request slip in the Anderson Library, leave a note in the Library Team mailbox, or contact the team by email at library @unityunitarian.org. We honor as many book requests as budget and appropriateness for the collection allows.
  • Gifts of books, CDs, and DVDs are always welcome and will be added to the collection in accordance with the library selection policy. Those not added to the library will be used in other ways to benefit programs in Unity Church.

The Bookstall
The Bookstall is conveniently located in the Parish Hall, and is open Sundays after each service, as well as other times by request. Here you may purchase a wide variety of books for adults and children on the worship themes, spirituality, topics of interest to community outreach teams, Unity Choir and other selected music CDs and DVDs, books by Unity authors, and those recommended by the ministers. You may order or request a title.  The Bookstall accepts cash, check, and credit card. A volunteer will be available during Bookstall hours to help with your purchase. The proceeds from each purchase you make at The Bookstall go to fund Unity library materials and programs. We greatly appreciate your support. Thank you.

Café Unity Poetry and Music Salon
Café Unity is an annual coffeehouse, typically held in the spring. With emphasis on original work, we feature the talent of the congregation and staff of Unity Church. If you are interested in reading or performing your original work, please contact the team by email at library @unityunitarian.org.

Cairns: The Unity Church Journal of the Arts
The Cairns Journal Committee formed in 2009 to publish the literary and artistic works of the Unity Church congregation. To learn more about it and view the submission guidelines, please visit the Cairns webpage. You contribute. We publish. The congregation is enriched.

Literary Readings
Each year, the Library-Bookstall Team holds a series of book readings and literary events featuring nationally known, local, and Unity Church authors. Please watch congregational communications for information on book events. Contact the team by email at library @unityunitarian.org with suggestions for book events at Unity Church.
